Vitamin K Deficiency with Inherited Disorder of Coagulation or Very Low Muscle Mass

IM injection contraindicated

This protocol applies when Vitamin K deficiency occurs in a patient where intramuscular injection is contraindicated — specifically in the setting of an inherited disorder of coagulation, or where there is very low muscle mass making the intramuscular route unsafe.

Because the standard intramuscular route cannot be used, an alternative administration route is employed. The approach involves Vitamin K prescribed via an alternative route — a partial summary is shown here.

The complete route selection, criteria, and sequencing are detailed in the full structured protocol.

If intramuscular injections are contraindicated (e.g. babies with inherited disorders of coagulation or babies with very low muscle mass) then Vitamin K may be prescribed by the Paediatricians via the oral route or by intravenous injection if the enteral route is contraindicated or unreliable.
