Treatment of Viral Encephalitis in St. Louis Encephalitis Virus Infection

This protocol addresses viral encephalitis specifically caused by St. Louis encephalitis virus — an arboviral infection capable of producing meningoencephalitis with significant neurological complications. Management requires prompt recognition and a targeted therapeutic approach.

St. Louis encephalitis virus encephalitis is a flaviviral central nervous system infection. Antiviral therapy may be considered in this setting, and early clinical decision-making is essential to limit disease severity and the duration of complications.

The structured protocol involves early initiation of interferon-based antiviral therapy as part of the management strategy for this presentation.

Complete regimen details — including agent selection, sequencing, and clinical thresholds — are available in the full structured protocol.

St. Louis encephalitis virus: IFN-2a can be considered (C-III).

Early initiation of therapy with IFN-a-2b was shown, in a limited series, to reduce the severity and duration of complications of St. Louis encephalitis virus meningoencephalitis; however, a prospective, randomized trial is needed before this approach is warranted.
