Treatment of Viral Encephalitis in Influenza Virus Encephalitis

Viral encephalitis caused by influenza virus is a serious neurological complication requiring prompt clinical recognition and a structured approach to management. The following protocol addresses this specific presentation.

This protocol applies to patients presenting with viral encephalitis in whom influenza virus is the identified or suspected causative pathogen.

An antiviral agent active against influenza is among the options that can be considered in this setting. The complete regimen — including selection criteria, sequencing, and supporting evidence — is available in the full protocol.

Influenza virus: oseltamivir can be considered (C-III).

Oseltamivir has been used in children with influenza B–associated encephalitis, although it is unclear that therapy aided in the recovery of the patients; oseltamivir and its metabolite, oseltamivir carboxylate, were not detected in the CSF in another report of a patient with influenza B–associated encephalitis.
