Treatment of Upper Limb Deep Vein Thrombosis with Renal Failure
Upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) in the setting of renal failure requires careful anticoagulant selection. Impaired renal clearance directly determines which initial agent is appropriate for this population.
This protocol applies to patients with upper-extremity DVT and concurrent renal failure. The presence of renal failure changes the preferred initial anticoagulant compared with standard UEDVT management, making agent selection a critical clinical decision point.
Treatment Approach
Acute anticoagulation is indicated, with the initial agent specifically selected to account for the renal failure context rather than agents typically used in standard UEDVT protocols.Full regimen ›

- Unfractionated heparin instead of LMWH is recommended for patients with renal failure or for those treated with catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT).
