Conductive Hearing Loss Due to Middle Ear Disease in a Child with Turner Syndrome

Children with Turner syndrome carry an elevated risk of middle ear disease and the conductive hearing loss it causes. Prompt recognition and management of this comorbidity is an important part of their care.

A child diagnosed with Turner syndrome presents with conductive hearing loss attributable to middle ear disease. This population is considered high-risk for chronic or recurrent middle ear involvement, making early assessment and rapid intervention a priority.

Evidence-based guidance supports a surgical or assistive-device intervention directed at restoring hearing in this setting — a procedural approach targeting the middle ear is among the recommended options.

The complete protocol, including the full decision algorithm and sequencing, is available via the link below.

  1. We recommend rapid intervention with tympanostomy tube insertion or hearing aids for conductive hearing loss due to middle ear disease in childhood.
  2. We suggest placement of tympanostomy tubes at the early stages of chronic or recurrent middle ear disease in childhood (as for a high-risk population).
