Clinical Scenario

This protocol addresses active, early-stage trachoma in patients presenting with either the follicular form (Stage 1 / TF) or the intense inflammatory form (Stage 2 / TI) involving the upper tarsal conjunctiva.

Staging Criteria

Stage 1 — TF Trachomatous inflammation – follicular: five or more follicles in the upper tarsal conjunctiva. Follicles appear as whitish, grey, or yellow elevations, paler than the surrounding conjunctiva.
Stage 2 — TI Trachomatous inflammation – intense: the upper tarsal conjunctiva is red, rough, and thickened, with blood vessels masked by diffuse inflammatory infiltration or follicles.

Treatment Approach (Partial Overview)

Management combines facial hygiene measures with antibiotic therapy — azithromycin is the recommended agent. The complete regimen, including dosing by patient group, is in the full protocol.

Stage 1: trachomatous inflammation – follicular (TF)

Clean eyes and face several times per day.
The treatment of choice is azithromycin PO.
