Treatment of Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease in Systemic Sclerosis

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a recognised comorbidity in systemic sclerosis. This clinical scenario focuses on patients with systemic sclerosis who also present with GERD, where oesophageal involvement can increase the risk of ulceration and stricture formation.

Current evidence-based guidance recommends a specific class of acid-suppressing agents as the first-line intervention to address reflux symptoms and help prevent oesophageal complications in this population.

Full regimen details, sequencing, and clinical considerations are available in the complete structured protocol.

The task force acknowledged the need to address gastro-oesophageal reflux disease with PPI treatment at least in first instance and recommended their use in an attempt to control symptoms and prevent oesophageal complications.
