Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limiting inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland that typically presents with anterior neck pain and tenderness. First-line management targets relief of pain and reduction of the underlying inflammatory process.
The primary treatment objectives are reduction of inflammation and relief of anterior neck pain — the hallmark symptoms in mild to moderate presentations.
Initial management centres on anti-inflammatory therapy, with an agent class that is well established for addressing both the inflammatory component and symptomatic neck pain in mild to moderate cases.
