Treatment of Disseminated Sporotrichosis in Patients Under 18 Years of Age

Disseminated sporotrichosis in pediatric patients requires a structured, evidence-based treatment approach. Children under 18 years with disseminated disease represent a population in which careful antifungal management is essential.

Clinical Scenario

Patient is under 18 years of age presenting with disseminated sporotrichosis. The disseminated form signifies more extensive involvement than localised cutaneous disease and calls for a defined, protocol-driven management approach in this age group.

Treatment Overview

Management follows a sequential antifungal strategy โ€” an initial parenteral antifungal agent is used for induction, with subsequent transition to an oral antifungal agent as step-down therapy.

Full agent selection, dosing, and sequencing are in the complete protocol below.

References

For children with disseminated sporotrichosis, amphotericin B, administered at a dosage of 0.7 mg/kg daily, should be the initial therapy, followed by itraconazole, administered at a dosage of 6โ€“10 mg/kg up to a maximum of 400 mg daily, as step-down therapy (B-III).
