Treatment of Skin Furuncle Caused by Community-Onset Antibiotic-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Clinical Scenario
Community-onset MRSA

This protocol addresses skin furuncle where the causative organism is antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus that has emerged in the community — commonly referred to as community-onset MRSA. Standard antibiotic choices are insufficient in this setting, requiring agents with demonstrated activity against this resistant pathogen.

Treatment Approach

Management centres on systemic antibiotics that are active against community-onset antibiotic-resistant S. aureus. Several antibiotic classes have documented utility in this setting, including certain oral agents as well as parenteral options for more severe presentations. The complete selection, sequencing, and dosing regimen are available in the full protocol.

For antibiotic-resistant S aureus that has emerged in the community, clindamycin, tetracyclines, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole, linezolid, or glycopeptide, for example, parenteral vancomycin, may be used (Laureano 2014; Nagaraju 2004).
