This protocol applies to submandibular sialolithiasis where the salivary stone is bimanually palpable and situated in the anterior region of the duct or gland. Stone location and clinical palpability are the defining features of this scenario and directly inform the management approach.
An anteriorly located, palpable submandibular salivary stone can be assessed under local anesthesia. It is generally accepted that an intra-oral approach is selected when sialolithiasis is located anteriorly.
In cases of recurrence or when other management strategies have not achieved the desired outcome, a surgical approach involving the gland itself may be considered and discussed with the patient.
