Seborrheic Dermatitis of the Scalp in Children from Birth to 24 Months of Age

Seborrheic dermatitis affecting the scalp is a recognised condition in early infancy. When it occurs in the first two years of life, clinical management is shaped by the limited evidence base available for this specific age group.

Clinical scenario: Child from birth up to 24 months of age presenting with seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. In this pediatric age range, scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of commonly used topical agents is scant.

Treatment approach: For this age group and presentation, the structured protocol involves an oral supplementation strategy. The evidence supporting this approach is limited and derives from a small number of controlled trials. The complete regimen — including the specific agent and all clinical parameters — is available in the full protocol.

In pediatric age (from birth up to 24 months), scant scientific evidence supports the effectiveness and safety of topical antifungals (1% ciclopirox shampoo, 1% KTZ cream/shampoo, 2.5% SS shampoo), anti-inflammatory (1% hydrocortisone cream/lotion) or keratolytic agents (3% salicylic acid in combination with 1.5% ciclopirox shampoo, lactamide monoethanolamine shampoo).

In children, limited and conflicting data support the benefit of oral biotin supplementation (4 mg/day for 4 weeks) vs placebo as shown in a dated double-blind, crossover trial.
