First-Line Treatment of Rosacea: Trigger Control and Skin Barrier Support
Clinical Scenario
This protocol addresses the initial management of rosacea — a chronic inflammatory facial skin condition in which consistent first-line protective measures form the cornerstone of care before other interventions are considered.
First-Line Approach
Management centres on protecting the skin through strict avoidance of personal trigger factors, together with carefully selected skin care products that support rather than disrupt the skin's natural barrier. Specific guidance on sunscreen selection, cleansers, cosmetics, and barrier restoration is part of this structured approach.
The complete, ordered regimen is available in the protocol — the above is only a partial overview.

- In our opinion, the trigger factors as mentioned above should be strictly avoided.
- Non-occlusive sunscreen is recommended, but the ambient heat from infrared light can still act as a trigger factor itself.
- Irritation of facial skin either due to soap or to occlusive cosmetics has to be strictly prevented using mild facial cleansers and light cosmetics.
- To restore the barrier of the stratum corneum, remoisturizing products can be applied, even though scientific evidence for their effectiveness is slim.
