This protocol addresses the management of renal vein thrombosis presenting in the context of isolated distal deep vein thrombosis — venous thromboembolism located below the popliteal vein — where the patient carries a high risk of thrombus extension.
Isolated distal DVT (sometimes called "calf DVT") refers to VTE confined below the popliteal vein. When a high risk of thrombus extension is present, these patients face greater risk of progression to proximal DVT and pulmonary embolism, making active treatment — rather than surveillance alone — the appropriate course.
Guideline-supported management centres on anticoagulation therapy. Oral anticoagulants are the mainstay, and the protocol specifies which class of agent is preferred for most patients, as well as the circumstances under which an alternative oral option is used instead. Duration and agent selection depend on patient-specific factors covered in full within the structured regimen.
