What Is the Nonoperative Treatment of Rectal Prolapse?

Clinical scenario

Rectal prolapse cannot be corrected by nonoperative means. Conservative management is therefore directed entirely at palliation: relieving the symptoms the prolapse causes rather than resolving the anatomical defect.

Treatment approach

The nonoperative approach targets three areas: bowel habit regulation, management of local tissue changes that complicate reduction in incarcerated prolapse, and preservation of perianal skin integrity. Each component addresses a distinct aspect of symptom burden.

The complete structured regimen — specific agents, priorities, and sequencing — is available in the full protocol.

Treatment goals

Palliation and improvement of prolapse-associated fecal incontinence, pain, and constipation.
