This protocol covers the use of a specific disease-modifying antirheumatic agent in reactive arthritis — one that may be applied as an alternative to, or in combination with, sulphasalazine. The complete regimen, including agent selection, dosing schedule, and combination strategy, is contained in the full protocol.
Methotrexate (MTX), administered parenterally once a week, has been used in patients with refractory ReA with good results on peripheral arthritis and dermatological manifestations.
MTX may be used in patients who are intolerant or refractory to SSZ treatment, at the same doses and schedule (7.5 to 25 mg weekly) as used in rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis, as an alternative or in combination with SSZ.
