Treatment of Symptomatic Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) occurs without an underlying lung condition or precipitating event. When symptomatic, it calls for active intervention guided by current evidence-based recommendations.

This protocol addresses patients presenting with symptomatic primary spontaneous pneumothorax — those in whom symptoms warrant intervention rather than conservative observation alone.

Guidance supports a minimally invasive aspiration-based approach as the preferred first intervention. An alternative ambulatory pathway exists for centres with the appropriate expertise and outpatient infrastructure. The complete regimen — including technique specifics, criteria for a repeat attempt, and conditions for ambulatory management — is in the full protocol.
