First-Line Treatment of Primary Biliary Cholangitis

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease requiring structured, evidence-based first-line pharmacological management to slow progression and preserve hepatic function.

Treatment Approach

First-line therapy for PBC centres on a bile acid agent โ€” ursodeoxycholic acid. The complete dosing schedule, monitoring parameters, and response criteria are detailed in the full protocol.

Full regimen available in the structured protocol below.

Fibrates can be considered as off-label alternatives for patients with PBC and inadequate response to ursodeoxycholic acid, although fibrates are discouraged in patients with decompensated liver disease.
