Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is characterised by an excessive rise in heart rate on standing, with associated symptoms including palpitations and sinus tachycardia. When non-pharmacological measures are insufficient, a structured pharmacological approach is indicated.
The primary objectives are reduction in orthostatic tachycardia, lowering of standing heart rate, and improvement of symptoms.
When non-pharmacological strategies prove ineffective, pharmacological therapies are directed at specific physiological aspects of the condition — including volume status and mechanisms driving the elevated standing heart rate.
