Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR) defines a distinct subset of posterior uveitis with a strong immunogenetic signature. More than 90% of patients with BCR carry the HLA-A29 haplotype, making it one of the most HLA-associated uveitic entities known. This immunological context directly shapes the treatment approach.
Posterior uveitis occurring in the setting of birdshot chorioretinopathy — a condition characterised by its near-universal association with the HLA-A29 antigen.

More than 90% of the patients with BCR are HLA-A29 positive.
Biologicals such as infliximab for the treatment of refractory non-infective posterior uveitis and severe SFU and daclizumab and tacrolimus for the treatment of BCR have been used with favorable response.
