Treatment of Post COVID-19 Condition with Olfactory Dysfunction in Long COVID

Persistent olfactory dysfunction is a recognised manifestation of long COVID. This protocol addresses Post COVID-19 condition in patients who continue to experience smell disturbance beyond the acute phase of infection.

Clinical scenario

Long COVID with olfactory dysfunction. Olfactory training is recommended for patients in this setting as a supported first-line intervention (evidence grade A, level I).

Treatment approach (partial overview)

In addition to olfactory training, a topical nasal corticosteroid approach may be considered for eligible patients to address persistent smell impairment. The complete protocol — including full eligibility criteria, sequencing, contraindication checks, and clinical decision points — is available via the link below.

For patients with long COVID, olfactory training is recommended to improve olfactory dysfunction (A, I).

For patients with long COVID, topical corticosteroid nasal sprays may be considered to improve olfactory dysfunction (A, IIb).

Local steroid therapy can be cautiously considered to improve olfactory disorders in patients without contraindications to steroids.
