PCOS with Hirsutism or Androgen-Related Alopecia When Combined Oral Contraceptives Are Contraindicated or Not Tolerated

Clinical Scenario
Hirsutism

This protocol addresses polycystic ovarian syndrome presenting with hirsutism and/or androgen-related alopecia in patients for whom combined oral contraceptive pills (COCPs) are contraindicated or poorly tolerated — provided that another effective form of contraception is in place.

Treatment Approach

When COCPs cannot be used, an alternative hormonal strategy targeting androgen activity is considered to address hirsutism and androgen-related hair loss. The full regimen — including agent selection and management details — is detailed in the structured protocol.

Where COCPs are contraindicated or poorly tolerated, in the presence of other effective forms of contraception, anti-androgens could be considered to treat hirsutism and androgen-related alopecia.
