Oral Treatment for Pityriasis Versicolor Refractory to Topical Therapy or Widespread Disease

Clinical Scenario

This protocol addresses adults with pityriasis versicolor in whom topical treatment has not been sufficient, or whose disease is extensive enough to make topical application impractical.

When Oral Therapy Is Indicated

Oral antifungal treatment is reserved — not first-line — for patients with disease refractory to topical therapy, or with widespread involvement that makes consistent topical application difficult. Patient-specific factors determine which oral option is most appropriate.

Treatment Approach

The structured regimen uses oral antifungal agents, with more than one option available. The choice between options depends on individual clinical factors.

Caution is required in patients with certain hepatic conditions, and specific options are to be avoided in pregnancy. The full protocol details which agents apply, and under what conditions.
