Treatment of Pancreatic Pseudocyst in the Tail of the Pancreas with Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding or Splenic Vein Involvement

This protocol addresses patients with a pancreatic pseudocyst located specifically in the tail of the pancreas who present with splenic vein involvement or upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This anatomical location and vascular complication pattern defines a distinct clinical scenario with a specific recommended surgical approach.

For this presentation, the established surgical approach involves resection of the affected pancreatic segment along with an additional procedure addressing the associated vascular anatomy — the complete protocol, operative details, and decision pathway are available in the full regimen.

  • In addition, we have previously found that most patients with pseudocysts in the pancreatic tail show splenic vein involvement or upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Therefore, these patients should be treated with distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy.
