Treatment of Ovarian Cancer in Mucinous Neoplasm / Carcinoma of the Ovary
Clinical Scenario
Mucinous neoplasms of the ovary are a distinct histological subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer with behaviour and treatment considerations that differ from the more common serous histology. Management is guided by stage, growth pattern (expansile vs. infiltrative), and histological grade.
Specific Population
This protocol applies to patients with confirmed mucinous neoplasm or mucinous carcinoma of the ovary, where histological subtype directly shapes the adjuvant and systemic treatment approach.
Treatment Approach (partial overview)
For infiltrative-type or higher-stage mucinous carcinoma, adjuvant systemic therapy is recommended. The regimens considered draw from both ovarian and gastrointestinal chemotherapy frameworks — reflecting the intestinal differentiation characteristic of this tumour type. Earlier-stage expansile-pattern tumours may be managed differently.
