Treatment of Oral Leukoplakia Presenting as a Large, Diffuse Lesion
This protocol addresses oral leukoplakia where the lesion is large and diffuse in extent. In contrast to small, well-defined, localised patches — which may be amenable to surgical or laser excision — a large diffuse presentation poses distinct management challenges and points toward a different therapeutic pathway.
Lesion morphology directly shapes treatment selection. A small, localised oral leukoplakia lesion can often be excised with low morbidity. When the lesion is large and diffuse, excision carries substantially greater burden, and the clinical focus shifts to non-surgical approaches.
For example, a small, well-defined, localized lesion may be amenable to excision (either surgical or laser removal) with low morbidity, whereas larger, diffuse lesions may require consideration for alternative methods such as topical or systemic chemoprevention.
