What Is the Treatment for Oculomotor Nerve Palsy?

Oculomotor nerve palsy may present with ptosis, diplopia, and light sensitivity with a dilated pupil. The management approach addresses these manifestations individually based on what is present.

Treatment Approach

Management is symptomatic. Occlusion is one consideration, with its role depending on the degree of ptosis — the complete protocol specifies the full set of targeted interventions for the range of presenting features.

The full regimen, including additional interventions and their indications, is available in the structured protocol below.

Clinical Goals

The aim is resolution of the oculomotor nerve palsy. Once the systemic evaluation is addressed and the patient is stable, some improvement is expected within 6 months of the inciting event. With periodic examination, further recovery may be seen up to 1 year post incident.
