Nontyphoidal Salmonellosis in Children Aged 6 Months and Older: Salmonella in Stool with No Bacteraemia

This protocol covers the management of nontyphoidal salmonellosis in children aged 6 months and older who have Salmonella confirmed in stool with no evidence of Salmonella bacteraemia.

Clinical Scenario

Age 6 months and older · Salmonella detected in stool · No Salmonella bacteraemia

Approach to Management

Management depends on the child's clinical status at presentation. A child who is clinically well may not require antibiotic treatment. When the child is febrile or unwell, microbiological investigation is indicated and intravenous antibiotic therapy may be considered, with an oral switch once the child improves to complete the treatment course.
