Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis in the setting of advanced and non-curable cancer requires a carefully considered clinical approach. The overall prognosis of the underlying malignancy substantially determines what interventions are appropriate.
This protocol applies to patients with advanced and non-curable cancer who develop non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis. In this population, surgery is unlikely to influence the final outcome and is also not expected to prevent recurrent embolisation.
Management centres on correcting the underlying cause. Surgical intervention is not undertaken in this setting.
