This protocol addresses patients with Multiple System Atrophy who present with sialorrhea — excessive drooling that may reflect both increased salivary gland secretion and impaired swallowing function.
Sialorrhea (excessive drooling) in the context of Multiple System Atrophy can result from a combination of excessive secretion from salivary glands and impaired swallowing, compounding the burden of the underlying neurological disease.
Management targets the salivary glands directly. A locally administered intervention involving injection into the salivary glands is part of the approach — with evidence for both safety and efficacy in reducing drooling.
Sialorrhea (ie, excessive drooling) can be a combination of excessive secretion from salivary glands and impaired swallowing function, as in progressive supranuclear palsy.
Botulinum toxin injection into the salivary glands is safe and effective in reducing drooling.
