Treatment of Migraine with Aura in Pregnancy

Preventive management of migraine with aura requires a substantially different approach during pregnancy. The selection of appropriate agents is constrained by fetal safety considerations, and not all options used outside pregnancy apply here.

Clinical scenario

This protocol applies to patients with migraine with aura who are pregnant. The clinical imperative is to identify preventive therapies that are both effective and safe in this specific population, recognising that standard migraine prophylaxis must be reassessed in the pregnancy context.

Preventive approach

Certain pharmacological agents — including selected beta-blockers — are among the options considered for prevention in this setting. Notably, at least one agent commonly used for migraine prophylaxis is not recommended during pregnancy. The complete regimen, including agent selection and relevant clinical criteria, is outlined in the full protocol.
