Treatment of Refractory Lupus Profundus
This protocol is for selected refractory cases of lupus profundus (cutaneous lupus erythematosus, CLE) — patients in whom the condition has not responded adequately and a specific systemic treatment is indicated.
The regimen is recommended for selected refractory CLE patients with lupus profundus, preferably in combination with antimalarials.
Treatment approach
The structured regimen for this scenario centres on thalidomide, used preferably alongside antimalarials. The complete dosing approach, tapering strategy, and full clinical algorithm are contained in the protocol below.
References
- We recommend thalidomide for selected refractory CLE patients, preferably in addition to antimalarials.
- We suggest a starting dose of 100 mg per day and, after clinical effectiveness, to taper to a minimum dose.
