Loiasis in the setting of concurrent onchocerciasis (Onchocerca volvulus) co-infection represents a clinically distinct scenario that requires careful, protocol-guided management. Standard approaches used for uncomplicated Loiasis cannot be applied without first accounting for the co-existing filarial infection.
This protocol addresses patients with Loiasis who also carry concurrent onchocerciasis (Onchocerca volvulus) co-infection. The presence of onchocerciasis significantly constrains the available therapeutic options and necessitates a specifically tailored treatment strategy to avoid serious harm.
DEC is contraindicated in persons with onchocerciasis because of the risk of blindness and/or severe exacerbation of skin disease.
