Treatment of Leukemia Cutis in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Leukemia cutis refers to the direct infiltration of the skin by malignant leukemic cells. When it arises in the setting of chronic myeloid leukemia, it signals systemic disease with cutaneous extension and calls for a specific, evidence-based therapeutic strategy.

Clinical Scenario

This protocol addresses leukemia cutis occurring in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) — a malignant clonal disorder of hematopoietic stem cells. Skin involvement in this context reflects the underlying CML clone and is managed in that framework.

Treatment Approach

Management centres on targeted systemic therapy directed at the molecular driver of the CML clone, with multiple generations of agents available depending on the clinical picture.

Full regimen options, agent selection, and sequencing are in the complete protocol →

References

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a malignant clonal disorder of hematopoietic stem cells.

In cases of CML, prognosis has been found to be markedly improved following treatment with various tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including first-generation imatinib, second-generation dasatinib, bosutinib, and nilotinib, and third-generation ponatinib.
