This protocol addresses labial herpes occurring in children who present with primary herpetic gingivostomatitis — the initial, often severe, oral manifestation of herpes simplex infection in young patients.
The patient is a child presenting with primary herpetic gingivostomatitis alongside labial herpes. This is a first-line management situation — no prior antiviral therapy has been attempted for this episode.
Management involves an oral antiviral suspension alongside symptomatic measures including oral analgesics and cold, soothing foods. The complete regimen — including selection criteria, dosing parameters, and sequencing — is contained in the full structured protocol.
Oral acyclovir suspension (Zovirax; 15 mg per kg five times per day for seven days) can be used to treat herpetic gingivostomatitis in young children.
Children should be treated symptomatically with oral analgesics and cold, soothing foods such as ice pops and ice cream.
The treatment group also had earlier resolution of the following signs and symptoms: fever (one versus three days); eating difficulties (four versus seven days); and drinking difficulties (three versus six days).
