Treatment of Kidney Stone Disease — Stone Less Than 10 mm When Active Treatment Is Indicated

This protocol applies to patients with kidney stone disease who have a renal calculus measuring less than 10 mm in diameter and for whom active treatment — rather than watchful waiting — has been determined appropriate.

Stone size is an important factor when selecting among available interventional approaches. The stone-free rate achieved by certain modalities varies with stone dimensions, making treatment selection clinically meaningful even in the sub-10 mm range.

The structured protocol includes interventional options for renal calculi, among which percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is one of the addressed modalities.

The complete selection criteria, preferred approach for this stone size, and procedural guidance are available in the full protocol →

  1. While PCNL efficacy is hardly affected by the stone size, the SFRs after SWL or URS are inversely proportional to stone size.
  2. Shock wave lithotripsy, PCNL and RIRS are available treatment modalities for renal calculi.
