Treatment of Juvenile Polyposis Syndrome: Surgical Management

Juvenile polyposis syndrome involves multiple polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The appropriate surgical intervention depends on the degree of GI involvement and the clinical circumstances present at evaluation.

Treatment Approach

Management centres on surgical resection of the gastrointestinal tract — ranging from endoscopic procedures to more extensive resection depending on the situation. The full protocol specifies which approach applies and under which clinical conditions each is indicated.

  • Endoscopic resection is recommended for symptomatic polyps, and surgical resection is recommended for patients with invasive carcinoma, intestinal intussusception, refractory anemia, and hypoproteinemia.
  • Polypectomy or partial resection of the GI tract with multiple polyps is weakly recommended.
  • Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for patients with advanced cancers.
