Clinical Scenario

Treatment of Intertrigo Complicated by Candidal (Candida) Infection

Intertrigo affecting the skin folds can be complicated by active candidal (Candida) infection. This superimposed fungal infection changes the clinical picture and calls for a specific management approach targeting the causative organism.

The defining feature of this presentation is intertrigo complicated by Candida — fungal superinfection of the skin folds requiring antifungal management rather than simple skin-barrier care alone.

The concurrent candidal infection is the key driver of the treatment approach. Not all antifungal agents are equivalent in this setting — coverage of the specific pathogen matters.

Management is based on topical antifungal therapy applied to the affected skin folds. The agent selected must provide appropriate coverage for candidal infection; not all available topical antifungals are active against Candida.

The complete protocol — which specific agents to use, application schedule, and expected treatment course — is set out in the full regimen below.

References

Intertrigo complicated by fungal infection should be managed with topical antifungals.

Nystatin is effective only for candidal intertrigo.

Topical treatments are applied twice daily until the rash resolves.
