Recurrent or Metastatic Hypopharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma After Platinum-Based Chemotherapy and Prior Immunotherapy

This protocol addresses patients with recurrent or metastatic hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma who have already received platinum-based chemotherapy within the preceding six months and have also had prior immunotherapy.

Clinical scenario: Recurrent or metastatic disease in patients pretreated with platinum-based chemotherapy within the last 6 months and with prior immunotherapy. After progression on platinum-based chemotherapy and anti-PD-1 inhibitors, no established standard of care exists, and treatment selection requires structured guidance.
Treatment approach (overview only): In this setting, salvage systemic options from specific agent classes are considered, along with the role of supportive care. The full protocol specifies the agents and selection criteria — access it below.

  • Pretreated with platinum-based ChT within the last 6 months and with prior immunotherapy
  • After progression on platinum-based ChT and anti-PD-1 inhibitors, no standard of care exists.
  • Taxane or methotrexate or cetuximab and/or BSC [III, C]
  • Cetuximab is approved by the FDA after platinum failure [III, C].
  • Taxanes with or without cetuximab and/or methotrexate are frequently used after platinum failure, although no randomised trials have demonstrated their benefit in this setting [III, C].
