This protocol applies when serum magnesium is 0.40 to 0.49 mmol/L without symptoms of hypomagnesaemia, or 0.50 to 0.70 mmol/L in the presence of symptoms, and first-line oral supplementation has not brought levels to the target range.
First-line oral magnesium supplementation (Magnaspartate®) was the initial intervention. The goal — serum magnesium stable and within the normal therapeutic range (0.70 to 1.0 mmol/L), reviewed weekly — was not achieved, triggering escalation to this second-line protocol.
Where first-line supplementation has not normalised levels, the second-line step involves switching to an alternative oral magnesium formulation — the full selection criteria, dosing, and management algorithm are in the structured protocol.
Serum magnesium stable and within the normal therapeutic range (0.70 to 1.0 mmol/L), reviewed weekly.
