This protocol addresses patients with hyperviscosity syndrome in the setting of primary or secondary elevation of the red cell count — where an elevated hematocrit is the underlying driver of increased whole-blood viscosity.
Whole-blood hyperviscosity is a recognised consequence of extreme elevation of the red cell count. Both primary and secondary causes of red cell count elevation fall within the scope of this protocol. Therapeutic intervention in these patients is well established.
Management involves a procedure that directly reduces the elevated red cell count, guided by a specific hematocrit target. The full protocol defines the precise target threshold, procedural criteria, and decision points.
