Treatment of Uncomplicated Hepatic Cystic Echinococcosis: CE2 and CE3b Cysts ≤ 5 cm

This protocol addresses first-line management of hepatic cystic echinococcosis in a specific, well-defined patient subset — those with uncomplicated liver cysts classified as CE2 or CE3b and measuring no more than 5 cm in diameter.

Clinical Scenario

Uncomplicated hepatic cystic echinococcosis with a cyst of type CE2 or CE3b, ≤ 5 cm in diameter. This specific cyst classification and size are the defining criteria for this treatment approach.

Treatment Approach

For eligible patients, Albendazole (ALB) monotherapy is the recommended initial antiparasitic approach in this setting.

Full dosing schedule, duration, and clinical algorithm are available in the complete protocol below.

Treatment Goals

Response is assessed at 3 months of treatment, looking for cyst changes such as detachment of the parasitic layers from the outer cyst wall, size reduction, or stage modification. Evaluation of complete response is carried out no earlier than 12 months after the end of treatment.

References

  • In patients with uncomplicated hepatic cyst types CE2 or CE3b ≤ 5 cm, initial treatment with ALB alone is suggested.
  • A lack of response is defined as an absence of cyst changes after 3 months of treatment (detachment of the parasitic layers from the outer cyst wall, size reduction or stage modification).
  • Complete response should be evaluated not earlier than 12 months after end of treatment.
