Treatment of Uncomplicated Hepatic Cystic Echinococcosis — CE1 or CE3a Cyst, <5 cm

This protocol addresses the management of patients with uncomplicated hepatic cystic echinococcosis presenting with a cyst classified as CE1 or CE3a, measuring less than 5 cm in diameter — a well-defined subset for which an evidence-based approach is established.

Clinical Scenario

Hepatic cystic echinococcosis (hydatid disease of the liver) with an uncomplicated cyst of type CE1 or CE3a, confirmed to measure less than 5 cm in diameter. No complications are present.

Treatment Approach

Antiparasitic therapy with albendazole (ALB) is the recommended first-line approach for cysts of this type and size.

The full protocol specifies the complete dosing regimen, administration requirements, and duration of treatment.

Treatment Goals

Response is assessed at 3 months of treatment, defined as detachment of the parasitic layers from the outer cyst wall, reduction in cyst size, or stage modification. Complete response is formally evaluated no earlier than 12 months after the end of treatment.

References

  1. In patients with uncomplicated hepatic cyst types CE1 or CE3a < 5 cm, treatment with ALB is suggested.
  2. A lack of response is defined as an absence of cyst changes after 3 months of treatment (detachment of the parasitic layers from the outer cyst wall, size reduction, or stage modification).
  3. Complete response should be evaluated not earlier than 12 months after treatment end.
