Choosing Photoepilation for Hirsutism in Women of Color

When women of color opt for photoepilation to manage hirsutism, the choice of light-source technology becomes a clinically important decision. Skin pigmentation affects how light interacts with tissue, and selecting an appropriate device and technique is essential for both safety and efficacy.

This protocol is specific to women of color who have elected a photoepilation approach for hirsutism. In this population, device parameters and skin-protection measures require particular attention — generic photoepilation settings are not appropriate.

Evidence points to a particular category of photoepilation device — distinguished by its wavelength range and pulse characteristics — combined with active skin cooling. The full protocol specifies which device type is recommended and how it should be applied in this population.
