As for the management of adult patients with acute episodes of dacryocystitis, the initial approach should consist in the taking of lacrimal drainage culture samples by puncture and aspiration of the lacrimal sac, followed by empirical treatment with oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
Depending on their progression, patients may require endonasal or external laser dacryocystorhinostomy, with the initiation of the oral antibiotics as much as 7 days prior to the procedure, but always taking into consideration the general health of the patient.
