Constipation in Hereditary Spinocerebellar Ataxia When Lifestyle Changes Have Not Worked
Bowel symptoms, particularly constipation, are a recognised complication of hereditary spinocerebellar ataxia and can significantly affect quality of life. When first-line lifestyle measures have been tried without achieving resolution, a structured next-line approach is indicated.
Clinical situation
Constipation is the most common bowel presentation in this condition. Faecal urgency and incontinence may also occur and represent a significant intrusion to quality of life.
Previous line — not sufficient
Prior approach: Changes in lifestyle — dietary modification, increased fluid intake, and mobility assistance.
Goal not reached: Resolution of constipation. This protocol applies when that target has not been achieved.
Next-line approach
When constipation persists despite lifestyle intervention, pharmacological options directed at bowel function may be considered. The full protocol details the specific agents and their sequencing.
