Hepatorenal Syndrome in Children with Liver Cirrhosis (Under 18 Years)

Clinical Scenario

This protocol covers hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) arising in paediatric patients — children under 18 years of age — who have underlying liver cirrhosis.

HRS in this age group is a serious and rare complication of cirrhosis. There are very few reports of paediatric HRS in the literature, and this condition is not commonly encountered in children, making structured guidance especially important when it is encountered.

Why This Presentation Matters

When liver cirrhosis is present in a child or adolescent and hepatorenal syndrome develops, the clinical situation is distinct from the adult population. The scarcity of paediatric-specific evidence means that management must be guided by carefully referenced, evidence-based protocols rather than routine extrapolation from adult practice.
