Treatment of Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome in Pneumococcal HUS, Age Younger Than 2

Pneumococcal hemolytic uremic syndrome is a recognised subtype of HUS that presents almost exclusively in very young children. Its clinical profile and the absence of certain coagulopathy features define a specific treatment pathway that differs from other HUS variants.

Clinical Scenario

Probable pneumococcal HUS is identified in patients typically younger than 2 years who present with sepsis, pneumonia, or meningitis alongside a positive direct Coombs test, in the absence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

Treatment Approach (Partial Overview)

Management is centred on targeted parenteral antibiotic therapy; notably, certain plasma-based interventions used in other forms of HUS require specific handling in this population. The complete structured regimen is available via the protocol below.
