Treatment of Guillain-Barré Syndrome When Still Able to Walk Unaided but Unable to Run (GBS Disability Grade 2)

Not all GBS presentations require the same response. Patients who remain ambulatory without support yet have lost the ability to run occupy a distinct functional category — GBS disability score (GBS-DS) grade 2 — with its own evidence-based first-line recommendation when presenting within 2 weeks of weakness onset.

Clinical scenario: The patient can still walk unaided but cannot run — GBS-DS grade 2. Symptom onset was within the past 2 weeks. This mild-to-moderate motor impairment marks a specific treatment decision point with dedicated guideline guidance.
Treatment approach
For this functional level, evidence supports a plasma exchange–based intervention applied within the first 2 weeks from onset of weakness. The full protocol — including the number of exchanges and procedural specifics — is available via the structured regimen below.
