What Is the Treatment for Gonococcal Pharyngitis?

Clinical Overview

Gonococcal pharyngitis is a pharyngeal infection requiring prompt antibiotic treatment. Because pharyngeal infection can be harder to eradicate than infections at other sites, treatment selection and post-treatment verification are both essential steps in management.

Treatment Approach

A specific guideline-recommended antibiotic regimen is the standard of care for gonococcal pharyngitis. Structured alternative regimens are available for patients who cannot receive the primary option due to allergy, needle phobia, or other contraindications. The complete treatment algorithm — including drug selection, sequencing, and the approach for patients with contraindications — is set out in full in the protocol.

Full regimen details, including all options and their conditions of use, are available via the link below.

Treatment Goals

Treatment success is confirmed by a test of cure. Patients with pharyngeal infection should test negative for N. gonorrhoeae, with NAAT performed at least two weeks after completing treatment.
